The PUBLIC LIBRARY series brings together photographic records of popular culture and subculture that became markers of an era, belonging less to the story of a single artist than to the communities that experienced them. Hence PUBLIC LIBRARY: treated as public records, each project takes its title from its Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) code.
On 28 September 1990, more than 2,000 people gathered at the Fort de Champigny, south-east of Paris, for a night that became a defining moment in the emergence of rave culture in France. Every photograph Stephane Sednaoui took is reproduced in the book, offering a rare glimpse of the crowd, music and collective experience as they unfolded.
